Overview

Antimicrobial Copper by CDA

When cleaned regularly, Antimicrobial Copper alloys are the only solid metal touch surface materials registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to continuously kill more than 99.9% of bacteria* that cause HAIs within two hours of contact.

Science supporting the EPA registration has proven Antimicrobial Copper to be a highly effective* touch surface materials and has sparked a global campaign advocating the use of these materials to supplement infection control in healthcare facilities, mass transit, educational institutions and beyond.

Antimicrobial Copper became the first solid metal to ever gain EPA Public Health Registration and is registered in the FIFRA (Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act).

As a condition of registration, EPA has mandated the creation of a forum to serve as an information clearinghouse and resource for conveying accurate information to the public and infection control community about the efficacy of Antimicrobial Copper products.

Copper can be combined with other metals to create alloys such as brass and bronze, which have different aesthetic and engineering properties.  With over 500 alloys registered by the EPA, a wide array of color, form and finish options are available to satisfy diverse design needs. These continuously active building materials can be used to create strong, durable surfaces suitable for a range of applications.

The antimicrobial property of copper based alloys like brass and bronze is inherent to the metals and will last for the entire lifespan of the product. Antimicrobial Copper alloys are also highly recyclable and complement sustainable design practices.

Antimicrobial Copper surfaces may be used in hospitals, other healthcare facilities, and various public, commercial, and residential buildings for approved non-food contact surfaces. Surfaces that may be exposed to outdoor environmental conditions (e.g. handrails, shopping carts, and ATM machines) are not representative of indoor laboratory test conditions, and therefore, may impart reduced efficacy if not cleaned when visibly soiled.

CDA and Copper Alliance

As a not-for-profit organization, the Copper Development Association (CDA) and Copper Alliance seeks to discover, research, and apply new and old copper technologies to solve modern problems.  CDA works directly with the companies that fabricate and produce copper materials to leverage the experience of an entire industry, and implement copper-based solutions where they will provide a direct benefit to end-users.

After discovering a study published in 1983, Dr. Harold Michels of CDA began to unravel the antimicrobial properties of copper.  Although this property of copper has been exploited for centuries, it was the combined effort of the industry that brought these remarkable materials to the frontline in the fight against a deadly problem growing in every corner of the world.

Because societal problems are more than just a domestic concern, CDA works in tandem with the International Copper Association (ICA) to help innovative solutions like Antimicrobial Copper reach global markets.

Together these organizations communicate the unique attributes that make this sustainable element an essential contributor to the formation of life, to advances in science and technology, and to a higher standard of living worldwide.
